The Simple (and Somewhat Obvious) Step to Achieving Your Goals That You May Not Be Taking

In a world flooded with social media posts continually reminding you just how successful everyone else is, it’s easy for doubts to start creeping in…

To wonder if you’re doing enough.

Achieving enough.

To start questioning if what you’re doing will ever be enough to ever achieve your goals.

You may even occasion wonder, “why them and not me?”

And while there may be some very good reasons why…

They may have worked harder

Or have a better network

Perhaps they’re just better at promoting themselves on social media.

But what if it was something far simpler?

What if the real secret for their success was so incredibly obvious and simple that you could start doing it right now (after, of course, you finish reading this newsletter article :)?

Taking Your Shot!

In the last few weeks, I started working with four, exciting, growing tech platforms.

Yet, there were no major changes in my work.

Nor is who I knew…or,

What I was doing.

And despite all this, I’m proud to say I’m now part of NewChip, EnquireAI, StartEd, and the Alchemist Accelerator.

Want to know my secret?

Ok, well, since we’re friends I’ll tell you…

Are you ready?

I asked.

To be fair, I’ve been working for a while and have acquired a lot of experience and training, and have some recognizable names on my LinkedIn profile, but that was all true before.

This isn’t to say you will get accepted or hired for everything you apply for, but to quote hockey legend Wayne Gretzky

“you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take”

So, why not Take the Shot!?

Initially, my self-appointed internal censor told me “don’t bother” (I’ve since fired him).

But then a new voice whispered, “go for it?”

So, I did.

Then, they did.

And well, now it’s a newsletter article (and no, I don’t do these things, only to have something to write about, it’s just an added benefit :)

Now, the real question is how you can develop your “game”, so you’re willing and able to take the shot.

To build on that VERY mediocre sports analogy, every day you’ll face difficult opponents. Some may be better, faster, and/or more skilled…but none of that matters if you’re not in the game.

So why not get off the bench and play

Winning the Game

1.    Create a Game Plan: As with any plan, the most important thing is to know your objective. Building a strong plan requires creating benchmarks for getting there and if you want to get there faster and saner, the support of different people and resources.

It is not just about what happens when you actually “ask,” but also knowing and having what’s required to get to that much desired “yes.”

2.    Get a Coach (or Friend): While I did finally start asking, it was a friend that pushed me at points to continue. It was with his help that I found new opportunities and the willingness to keep trying.

3.    Take the Damn Shot: Even once you have all or most of the requirements (perfection is highly overrated) and someone telling you to do it, in the end, only you can do the asking.

I get it, putting yourself out there is scary, but if it helps, it does feel pretty feel great when you succeed…so why not take the damn shot! You may not score the first time, second, or even the third time, but each time you try, you’ll get a bit better until one day you finally succeed.

Game On!
