The Great Organizational “Dating” Dilemma…How to Develop an LTR in a Competitive Job Market

You posted your best photos.

Write and rewrite your profile…

Yet somehow still nobody is swiping right.

Then, suddenly it hits you, you realize that everyone you’re interested in, isn’t interested in you.

How can it be?

You were the best in your class.

Established.

You did and said all the right things.

And yet, crickets.

Only a few years before you were so popular.

Everyone wanted you.

You couldn’t manage all the interest.

But now…now, you can’t compete.

Everyone seems to be looking for younger, hipper and more interesting.

The market’s changed.

You can no longer choose; you have to wait to be chosen.

However, no matter how much you try or maybe because of it…you’re still losing the great organizational dating game.

Creating a Better “Dating” Profile

These days finding talent can feel more and more like online dating, with talent often swiping right on the company that is perceived to be more “attractive.”

They go for the more exciting startup, often not even looking at the older, more stable, and seemingly less interesting company.

Like with dating it’s easy for both parties to get caught up in superficial metrics and focus on appearance.

Likewise, it can also be easy to seek stability, putting aside other important criteria that are important to you in hopes of landing that coveted LTR.

Thankfully job hunting is easier than online dating :).

These days employers and candidates can do due diligence (and just cyberstalking your potential “date” isn’t enough)

You can speak to past and current relationships and find out if the profile is real or if you’re being catfished (this newsletter isn’t only informative, it’s also educational :).

No matter what stage the company or the relationship you need to know what to expect.

In an age where marketing and social media rule, things can often seem better than they are for both parties.

Recently, MIT’s Sloan Management Review had a great article titled, Toxic Culture is Driving the Great Resignation (worth the read).

In it, they highlighted a few of the most innovative, recognizable companies, SpaceX, Tesla, Nvidia, and Netflix, all of whom were experiencing significantly higher attrition rates than their less “exciting” competitors.

To be clear that isn’t to say whether these companies would be the perfect match for some.

It’s just like in all good relationships, you need to take the time to get to know each and find out each other’s non-negotiables to avoid a very expensive breakup.

In the meantime, it’s important for both companies and talent to stay open to all “matches,” even those that might not, on the surface seem like a match.

Because you never know if they just might be “the one.”
